When ISDN AUTO is set to ON your MultiCom router will try to open a connection whenever a device or program requests access to a remote IP address. While this may be convenient there are often many unknown network requests being made that could create ISDN connections to your ISP or remote office. Below is a list of possible reasons a device on your network is requesting external network access.
- A mail program (e.g. Netscape, Eudora, MS Exchange) that is configured to check mail every few minutes.
- A web browser that has a starting page with an address that is outside your network (such as http://someplace/mystartpage.html). Use a blank page or a local file as start page instead, e.g. file://mystartpage.html .
- Using a URL like http://localhost/mystartpage.html ( your computer will
- have to contact an external DNS server to resolve the name "localhost"!)
- A web page that updates automatically. Some web pages, e.g. home pages, live images, update themselves automatically and can keep the line open. Don't keep a window with such a page open while you are not using it.
- Software that automatically checks the manufacturer's website for updates.
Some commands to help you identify what is happening include...
- INFO ISDN HISTORY - to show when the connections are occurring
- INFO SITE sitename FRAMES - to show you the list of what IP packets asked for remote access
- INFO SITE sitename FRAME x - to look specifically at the IP frame that caused the line to open
