When you are using CHAP there are 2 authentications occurring from us and a periodic-challenge-demand back. The MultiCom responds to the periodic challenge with the REMOTE userid and password (hence the use of it twice, for LOCAL and REMOTE passwords.) Users still cannot get in via a phone call since there was no number enabled.

When you use the PAP authentication, only one authentication is occurring, but it uses the LOCAL userid and password when calling the ISP.

So, when using PPP Remote CHAP, both LOCAL and REMOTE userid/ passwords must be used. When using PPP Remote PAP, only the LOCAL userid/ password needs to be set.

Both of the above rules are valid whether PPP Local is active for incoming calls or not.
